Since making his debut in the Silver Age Of Comic Books, The Abomination has made his appearance in other Marvel-endorsed products such as arcade and video games, animated television series, merchandise such as action figures and trading cards. But his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut came in the 2008 movie The Incredible Hulk, the role being portrayed by Tim Roth playing Emil Blonsky, who would later becomeThe Abomination . Roth is set to reprise this role in the phase 4 project, the Disney+ television series She-Hulk scheduled for 2022. The Abomination will also appear in the Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings movie releasing in 2021 and the Read on to know more about The Abomination.

Comics Origin

Born in Zagreb, Emil Blonsky was a communist Croatian Yugoslavian spy, who infiltrated the U.S. Air Force base in New Mexico commanded by General Ross and where Dr. Bruce Banner conducted many of his experiments with gamma radiation. What he did not know was that Banner was actually attempting to kill the Hulk. The alien known as the Stranger put the Hulk under his control and intended to use him to destroy humanity. However, the Stranger's control did not extend to Bruce Banner's persona. When the Hulk next changed back into Banner, the scientist decided to kill himself in order to save the world from a Stranger-controlled Hulk. Therefore, Banner made his way into his laboratory on the Air Force base and prepared to activate a machine that would bombard him with enough gamma radiation to kill him.

Blonsky had made three attempts to sabotage missiles at the base that were vital to the defense of the United States. Although each attempt was narrowly thwarted, the Air Force still did not know who the saboteur was until Blonsky's transformation. While Banner was preparing to activate the machine, he was carried off by security officers. All this while, Blonsky was hiding in the same room. Trying to take advantage of the opportunity, Blonsky goes on to activate the machine without knowing its true purpose. He is bombarded with a more concentrated and intense dosage of gamma radiation than Banner himself had received. However, this doesn’t prove to be fatal due to Blonsky having an unknown genetic factor in his body that saved him from being killed by such a great dose of gamma radiation, much like Banner. He is transformed into a green Hulk-like being, but larger and stronger and is dubbed the Abomination.

Powers and Abilities

Due to being exposed to the same Gamma radiation that was responsible for turning Banner into the Hulk, The Abomination has the same powers as The Hulk. These are however much greater than those of Hulk’s, due to Blonsky having been bombarded by a much larger amount of the radiation. These abilities are as follows:

  1. Superhuman Strength, Stamina and Durability
  2. Regenerative Healing Factor
  3. Gamma Radiation/Energy Manipulation and Emission
  4. Underwater Breathing
  5. Suspended Animation (The Abomination can enter a state of coma-like suspended animation allowing him to possibly survive indefinitely)

MCU Appearance

As mentioned above, The Abomination made his MCU debut in the 2008 movie The Incredible Hulk, with the role of Emil Blonsky being portrayed by Tim Roth. However, the movie sees Blonksy turning into the Abomination in a different manner as compared to the comics. In the movie, Emil Blonsky is a former special-ops commander of the British Royal Marines who was loaned to SOCOM.

In his efforts to capture the Hulk, General Thaddeus Ross recruits Blonsky and has him lead a team to capture Banner in Brazil. The team are unaware of Banner being the Hulk, and are therefore wiped out, leaving Blonsky to fight Hulk. After confronting Ross about the incident, Blonsky is injected with a variant of the Super Soldier Serum in order to give him leverage against the Hulk. After again losing to Hulk during a battle at Culver University, Blonsky has himself injected with a larger dose of the serum, which not only fully enhances his body, but once again increases his strength and healing power. Blonsky is finally transfused with Banner's gamma-irradiated blood by Dr David Stern, causing him to transform into the Hulk-sized Abomination.
