Who is Moon Knight? Know More About Him

Moon Knight is a superhero appearing in the comic books published by Marvel Comics. Created by writer Doug Moench and artist Don Perlin, the character made his comics debut in the August 1975 issue of Werewolf by Night #32. Moon Knight is the alter ego of Marc Spector, a Jewish-American former US Marine turned C.I.A. agent.

Marvel Moon Knight

The character has appeared in various media outside of comics, including animated series and video games. Moon Knight will be making his live-action debut in Moon Knight, the upcoming Disney+ television series announced as a part of Phase4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe(MCU). The series is set for a 2022 release, and has Oscar Isaac playing the titular role of Moon Knight. Read on to know more about this mercenary turned superhero.

Origin in the Comics

As mentioned above, Marc Spector was a former US Marine who also became a C.I.A agent. He was born in the United States, the son of a rabbi who as a child had managed to escape Nazi prosecution after Hitler invaded Czechoslovakia. Marc enlisted in the Marines and served for three years before being dishonorably discharged after his superiors got to know about his past. Marc had developed a dissociative personality disorder in his childhood. He then joins the C.I.A, later leaving this as well. Marc becomes a mercenary, and becomes friends with "Frenchie" Duchamp. They go on to meet Raul Bushman in Egypt, and eventually travel to North Sudan, where Spector would eventually gain superpowers.

Marvel Moon Knight

The group travels to Sudan in order to raid an archaeological site. Bushman kills the lead archaeologist, Peter Alraune, to find the Egyptian pharaoh's tomb, Spector punches Bushman to protect Alraune's daughter, Marlene. Furious, Bushman mortally wounds him and leaves him for dead in the desert. Spector however manages to reach the tomb of the pharaoh, where his spirit is approached by the moon god Khonshu, who offers him a second chance at life in exchange for becoming his avatar on Earth. As a result, Spector is resurrected and given superhuman abilities. Returning to the US, he invests the money that he had accumulated as a mercenary to make a fortune, and becomes the crimefighter Moon Knight.

Powers and Abilities

Due to being an incarnation of the moon god, Moon Knight also gained most of the moon god’s powers. However, he loses these powers due to the moon god punishing him for past mistakes. The powers are as follows:

  1. Power Absorption
  2. Necromancy (the ability to control the dead)
  3. Lunakinesis and Geokinesis (Moon Knight is able to control the moon and earthly elements)
  4. Phase Transformation (altering the phase and composition of different materials)
  5. Moon Empowerment (the moon gives a subsequent boost to his abilities)
  6. Self Sustenance (surviving for extended periods without need of a breathable atmosphere)

In addition to these powers, Moon Knight is also an expert fighter, marksman, and pilot. Having served in the C.I.A and Marines.

Appearance in the MCU

The character is all set to make his MCU debut in the Moon Knight series, set to release in 2022 in Disney+. As mentioned above, Oscar Isaac will be playing the titular role. The series is a part of Phase 4, and will consist of 6 episodes.
